The Moreton Bay Sharpie 8 Metre is designed in the traditional American style, with modifications for improved stability and accomodations. It is intended for a couple or family of four, for day, overnight or short term cruising. The vessel is intended for use in sheltered ,semi-sheltered or coastal waters, and is not intended for open ocean voyaging. The modern sharpie is nonetheless a very safe and seaworthy yacht type with many modern sharpies possessing qualities of stability, safety and general sailing ability which places them on a par with modern keel yachts..
Construction is with the timber / epoxy construction method, from plywood
planking over ply bulkheads. Internal framing has been kept to a minimum,
utilizing interior joinery to contribute to hull strength
The vessel is designed principally to use the 'tack and tape' or 'stitch and glue' building method. This method eliminates the need for chine logs and most internal framing. Chines and bulkhead / hull skin joins are constructed with strong epoxy fillets and glass tape. This method provides exceptional strength and eliminates unnecessary weight. Of course, the vessel may be constructed with traditional chine timbers, and this is catered for in the plans
The rig is the typical low profile ketch rig required by the sharpie configuration, with masts that can be raised without special blocks and tackle. The vessel also features tandem cenreboards, which together with the ketch rig allow perfect balance on any point of sailing. The twin boards also intrude less into the accomodation, and are no more difficult to make than a single large board.
The MBS 8 is trailable, although
it must be remembered that this is a large, substantial vessel and will
require a substantial trailer and towing vehicle, such as a 4 X 4. It is
not suited for the average family sedan.

Plans for the MBS
8 are extremely comprehensive, with 8 sheets (full A1 size)
of drawings, complete written specifications and builders manual. All measurements
are in both metric and Imperial. This is an ideal project for the first
time boat builder.
